Choosing a Linen Fitted Sheet for a Mattress, Topper and Protector

Choosing a Linen Fitted Sheet for a Mattress, Topper and Protector

When a topper and protector sit beneath your fitted sheet, measure the bed with those layers in place. The mattress label alone may not describe the depth your sheet needs to fit.

Measure the stack as you use it

Lay the topper and protector flat in their normal positions. Measure width and length, then the full depth from the bottom of the mattress to the top of the sleeping surface. Record whether the topper has rounded edges or overhangs the mattress. Avoid pressing a soft topper flat merely to make the number smaller.

For example, a mattress labelled 25 cm deep plus a 5 cm topper does not automatically mean you should order a sheet described as a 30 cm pocket. The finished sheet design and the maker’s definition of fit still matter. Provide the actual measurements and ask which option fits them.

Understand the depth stated in the listing

A listing may describe the maximum mattress depth it fits or the sewn depth of the sheet. These are not necessarily interchangeable. If the meaning is unclear, ask before selecting the size. Use the stated fit range rather than adding an arbitrary allowance: too much extra fabric can leave the sheet loose.

Check movement before blaming the fabric

If your existing sheet slips, first check whether the topper itself is moving, whether the corners are fully seated and whether the sheet is too shallow or loose. A different fabric cannot guarantee that an unstable topper will stay still. For adjustable beds, explain how the mattress moves when asking for sizing advice.

Tell the maker about future changes

If you plan to replace or remove the topper soon, mention that before ordering a custom fitted sheet. A sheet chosen for a much deeper stack may fit differently once the topper is gone. It may be better to finalize the sleeping setup first.

What to send before ordering

Provide mattress width × length, total depth with all under-sheet layers, topper thickness, bed type and a clear photograph of the corner if the shape is unusual. Ask the seller to confirm the recommended finished dimensions and selected option.

A quick sizing message to send us

“I need one fitted sheet. My mattress is ___ wide × ___ long, and the total depth with my topper and protector is ___. All measurements are in ___. My preferred fabric and colour are ___. Which size should I select, or do I need a custom quote?”

Common questions

Should I measure with the protector on?

Yes, measure the setup the fitted sheet will cover. A thin protector may add little depth, but a padded one can change the fit.

Should I size up automatically?

No. Check width, length and depth together and ask how the listing defines fit.
