Duvet Cover vs Comforter vs Quilt: What's the Difference?

Duvet, duvet cover, comforter, quilt, coverlet, doona. Six words, three actual products, and a lot of confusion at checkout — especially when you are buying across Australia, the US and the UK, where the same word means different things.

What is the difference between a duvet cover, a comforter and a quilt?

A duvet is the plain insert — a fabric shell filled with down, wool, kapok or polyester. It is not meant to be used bare. A duvet cover is the washable case you slide that insert into, closed with buttons, ties or a zip; it is the part you actually see and launder. A comforter is a single sewn-shut piece with the filling quilted permanently inside — decorative on the outside, no cover needed, and much harder to wash. A quilt (or coverlet) is thinner and flat, stitched in a pattern through three light layers, used as a top layer rather than your main warmth.

Which one do you actually need?

• You want one bed setup that works all year and washes easily: duvet insert plus a linen duvet cover. Change the insert weight by season, wash the cover weekly.
• You want the least effort at bed-making: a comforter. One piece, straight on the bed. The trade-off is laundering — most need a commercial machine.
• You sleep warm, or you want a layer to fold at the foot of the bed: a quilt or coverlet, over a flat sheet.
• You share a bed with someone who runs hotter or colder: two single-size duvets in two covers on one bed — the Scandinavian method, and the single best fix for duvet tug-of-war.

Why a linen duvet cover instead of cotton?

The cover is the only part touching your skin, so its fibre matters more than the insert's. Linen at 165–175 GSM breathes better than cotton at the same weight, wicks moisture instead of holding it, and drapes over the insert rather than sitting on it like a box — which is most of why a made bed looks relaxed rather than stiff. It also survives weekly washing for a decade, where cotton covers thin at the corners and the buttonholes within a few years.

• Doona (Australia) = duvet = comforter insert.
• Doona cover (Australia) = duvet cover.
• Comforter (US) = sewn-shut filled top layer. In the UK this is often called a quilt, which is why online listings contradict each other.
• Coverlet = lightweight top layer, no substantial filling.
• Duvet set usually means cover plus pillowcases, not the insert. Always check.

What size duvet cover for your bed?

Match the cover to the insert, not the mattress. A duvet cover that is 5–10 cm larger than the insert on each side hangs correctly; much larger and the insert slides around inside. If your insert is an odd size — a lot of European and vintage inserts are — a made-to-measure cover is the only clean solution, and it costs no more than a standard one when the cover is cut to order.

Common questions

Do you need a top sheet with a duvet cover? Not for warmth. A flat sheet means you can wash the sheet more often than the cover, which many people prefer in summer.

Can you put a comforter inside a duvet cover? Yes, and people often do to make a comforter washable. Check the dimensions first; comforters are usually cut wider than duvets of the same nominal size.

Are duvet covers with buttons or zips better? Zips close fully and are faster; buttons are easier to repair and let a little more air move. We use natural coconut buttons for that reason.

How often should you wash a duvet cover? Every 1–2 weeks. The insert itself needs washing only once or twice a year, which is the whole point of using a cover.
