Yes, for a specific reason: it is used every single night, and unlike almost anything else you can give, it gets better rather than worse. Linen softens for the first year and then holds for a decade or two, so it becomes an object with a date attached to it. The one risk is sizing — and the fix is to give the pieces that do not depend on knowing someone's mattress depth.

Safe bets, ranked by how little you need to know

1. Pillowcase pair. Standard sizes are consistent, they suit any bed, and a pair of linen pillowcases is the single most-noticed upgrade in a bedroom. Almost impossible to get wrong.
2. Flat sheet. Forgiving on fit — it drapes rather than fits — and useful in every household.
3. Duvet cover. The showpiece gift. You need their duvet size, not their mattress depth, which is easier to ask about casually.
4. Fitted sheet. The one to avoid unless you know both the bed size and the mattress depth. Deep mattresses defeat standard fitted sheets constantly.

What to give for a wedding

A duvet cover set in a neutral. Weddings are the one occasion where the ten-to-twenty-year lifespan is the whole point: it is a gift they will still be using on their anniversary. Two practical notes. Choose natural, oatmeal, white or soft grey rather than a colour you like — the couple has usually not finished decorating, and neutrals survive whatever they decide. And consider monogram or initial embroidery; it turns a household item into a keepsake and costs very little.

What to give for a housewarming

Pillowcases, a flat sheet, or table linen. Housewarming gifts should be useful in week one and should not require you to know the layout of a home you have not seen yet. A pair of linen pillowcases in a neutral does that. Table linen — a runner or napkins — is the same idea and works even if the bedroom is already sorted.

What to give for a new baby

Read this part carefully, because well-meant bedding gifts are often unusable. Babies under 12 months should not sleep with pillows, duvets, quilts or any loose bedding — safe-sleep guidance is a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet and nothing else. So the right gifts are:

Something that cannot be bought off a shelf: a custom size, a colour matched to a room, or embroidery. A cover cut for an antique bed, a caravan bunk or a non-standard European insert is a gift that solves a problem the person has quietly lived with for years.

How to give it well

• Ask one question, casually: "what size is your bed?" It is not a spoiler, and it saves a return.
