You are on the checkout page with a set in the cart and a nagging feeling you are paying for a piece you will never use. Here is the honest answer on when a set is the better buy and when it quietly wastes money.
Should you buy a linen bedding set or separate pieces?
Buy the set if you are starting from nothing or want everything to match exactly. Buy pieces separately if you already own bedding you like, if you have a deep mattress, or if you sleep hot and skip the flat sheet. A four-piece set is usually 10–20% cheaper than the same pieces bought individually, so the set wins on price — but only if you will actually use all four pieces. A $340 set with an unused flat sheet is worse value than $290 of pieces you use every night.
What is in a linen bedding set?
Terminology is not standard across brands, so check the piece list before you pay. Ours run like this:
- Duvet cover set (3–4 piece): duvet cover + 2 pillowcases, sometimes + 1 fitted or flat sheet. $161–$408 depending on size and dye method.
- Sheet set: fitted sheet + flat sheet + 2 pillowcases, or fitted + 2 pillowcases. $123–$203.
- Individual pieces: pillowcase $14–$24, flat sheet $115–$152, duvet cover $84–$195.
Two traps worth knowing. A "duvet set" almost never includes the duvet insert itself — only the cover. And in Australia a "doona cover" is the same thing as a duvet cover, while a US "comforter set" includes a sewn-shut filled top layer instead.
When separate pieces are the smarter buy
- You have a deep or unusual mattress. Buy the fitted sheet to your exact depth and the rest standard. This is the single most common reason a set disappoints.
- You sleep hot and never use a flat sheet. Skip it; put the money into a second pillowcase pair instead, which is what actually touches your face.
- You already own bedding you like. Start with pillowcases. They are the cheapest way to find out whether you like linen, and the most-noticed change in a bedroom.
- You want to mix colours. Natural sheets with a coloured duvet cover, or two different pillowcase colours, is a deliberate look — and sets rarely allow it.
- You are testing a brand. Order one pillowcase first. Any maker who requires a minimum order for that is not set up for you.
The order we recommend if you are buying gradually
- Pillowcases. Cheapest entry, biggest sensory difference, no sizing risk.
- Duvet cover. The showpiece — it changes how the whole room reads, and you keep your existing insert.
- Fitted sheet. Measure your mattress depth first, then order to that depth.
- Flat sheet. Last, and only if you use one.
How to work out whether the set is actually cheaper
Add up the individual prices of only the pieces you will use, then compare. If the set is cheaper than that number, buy the set. If it is not, you are paying for a piece to sit in a cupboard. It takes ninety seconds and it is the only reliable way to answer this, because set discounts vary a lot by size.
Common questions
Do I need a flat sheet if I have a duvet cover? Not for warmth. A flat sheet means you can wash the sheet more often than the cover, which many people prefer in summer.
Can I mix and match colours in a set? With us, yes — sets can be built from any of our 50+ colours rather than a fixed combination. Most brands cannot do this because their sets are pre-packed.
Is there a minimum order? No. One pillowcase is a valid order, and it gets the same handmade construction as a 500-set hotel run.
What if only one piece is the wrong size? Because everything is cut to order, we exchange the single piece rather than the whole set. Returns are open for 30 days.
Does a set ship together? Yes, one parcel, one tracking number, 3–4 weeks internationally from Hanoi.
