Made-to-Measure vs Standard Bedding: Is Custom Worth It?

Custom bedding used to mean a surcharge, a long wait and a phone call. For made-to-order makers none of that is true any more — and the numbers on generic bedding are worse than most people realise.

Is custom size bedding worth it?

Yes, if your bed is outside standard dimensions — and increasingly that is most beds. Around 65% of consumers say they are dissatisfied with generic bedding, and fit is the usual reason. Meanwhile personalised bedding orders have risen roughly 25% since 2021, in a home bedding market growing from about $100 billion in 2025 to $111 billion in 2026. Getting the size right is also measurably cheaper: research suggests correct sizing prevents about 9 in 10 people from replacing sheets early, saving around $74 a year. When custom costs the same as standard, as it does with us, the decision is not close.

Standard vs made-to-measure, compared honestly

• Fit. Standard bedding is cut for mattresses 23–30 cm deep. Modern hybrids and pillow-tops routinely exceed 38 cm. Made-to-measure is cut to the depth you actually have.
• Price. Standard is cheaper per unit at the low end. Made-to-measure from a cut-to-order workshop costs the same as the nearest standard size — we add no custom surcharge. Buying custom from a brand that holds stock does cost more, because it interrupts their production.
• Speed. Standard ships immediately. Ours takes 1–2 business days to make plus 3–4 weeks delivery. This is the real trade-off, and the honest reason to buy standard if you need bedding this week.
• Lifespan. A sheet that fits is not stressed at the corners and lasts markedly longer. Ill-fitting sheets fail at the elastic and the corner seams first.
• Choice. Standard gives you the colours in stock. Made-to-order gives you 50+ colours, mixed sets and custom dyeing from 500 m.

When standard bedding is genuinely the right call

We would rather say this than have you return something. Buy standard if: your mattress is a common size and under about 30 cm deep; you need it within days; you are furnishing a rental or a guest room you rarely use; or you want to try linen cheaply before committing. Buy made-to-measure when the bed is deep, oversized, antique, tapered, built-in, or when you have already replaced sheets twice because they kept coming off.

The three myths that stop people ordering custom

1. "It must cost more." Not from a workshop that cuts every piece to order anyway. The fabric consumption sets the price, not the fact that the number is unusual.
2. "There will be a minimum order." There is none here. One custom pillowcase is a real order.
3. "It will take months." Custom adds no time to our process — the lead time is identical to a standard order.

Common questions

Does custom size cost extra? No surcharge. Larger sizes use more fabric so they cost more than smaller ones, but the price follows the size, not the bespoke-ness.
