Which SCANDALINEN Fabric Is Right for You?

Which SCANDALINEN Fabric Is Right for You?

French Linen, Bamboo Linen, and H'Mong Hemp Compared

We make four different fabrics. People ask us regularly which one they should choose, and the answer is genuinely different depending on who is asking. This guide is our attempt to give an honest answer to that question, without steering everyone toward the most expensive option or the easiest sale.

The short version: French Linen is our flagship and the right choice for most people. The two Bamboo Linen blends exist for specific situations where French Linen is not the best fit. And the H'Mong Hemp products are not bedding at all. They are something else entirely, and they deserve to be understood on their own terms.

100% French Linen: The One Most People Should Choose

If you are buying bedding and you are not sure which fabric to get, start here. French Linen is what SCANDALINEN is built around. It is the fabric we know best, the one we have spent the most time understanding, and the one that rewards long-term use more than any other textile we work with.

The fiber comes from flax grown in France and Belgium. The climate there produces long, fine fibers that cannot be replicated in other growing regions. That is not marketing language. A study published by the US National Institutes of Health confirmed that China imports considerable quantities of long fiber from France and Belgium because domestically grown Chinese flax is not fine enough for quality textile production.

Our French Linen arrives at our Hanoi workshop at 165 to 175 GSM, already stonewashed and pre-treated for shrinkage. It is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified at every stage of production. We cut and sew it here. What you receive has been through a specific, documented journey that we can trace completely.

The honest thing to say about the initial feel: new French Linen is crisp. It has a slight stiffness that some people love immediately and some need two or three washes to appreciate. After those washes, it relaxes into something that cannot be replicated by any process that starts with a shorter fiber or a softer weave. It improves every wash for years.

French Linen also has no panel seams. Because the fabric is woven in a wide width, duvet covers and sheets are constructed from a single panel of cloth. This is a practical difference from the 45/55 Bamboo Linen, and it matters for some customers.

Best for: people who want bedding that gets better over years, hot sleepers in warm climates, buyers who want OEKO-TEX certified natural fiber, and anyone making a long-term investment in their bedroom.

Not ideal for: people who want immediate softness from the first night and are not willing to wait through a break-in period.

Bamboo Linen 45/55: The Bridge Fabric

The 45 percent linen, 55 percent bamboo rayon blend exists because some customers find pure linen too crisp at first and want something that feels soft immediately. The bamboo rayon content does exactly that. From the first night, this fabric has a softness that takes French Linen several washes to develop.

It is also genuinely breathable. The linen content ensures real airflow through the fabric. It is not as thermally exceptional as French Linen in very hot, humid conditions, but for most climates and most sleepers it is more than adequate.

Two things to know before buying. First, the fabric comes in a narrower width, which means duvet covers and flat sheets are constructed with two flat panel seams running along each side. The seams are neatly flat-stitched and add a subtle aesthetic detail to the design – they are not uncomfortable to sleep against. Second, this fabric shrinks approximately 10 percent on the first wash. This is normal and our cut dimensions account for it, but it is useful to know in advance so the first wash result does not come as a surprise.

When the 45/55 first arrives, it has a slight sheen from the bamboo rayon content. After the first wash, this softens into a matte, natural texture. Some customers prefer the fabric post-wash to how it arrived. We consider the first wash the beginning of the fabric's real life.

Best for: first-time linen buyers transitioning from cotton, people who want natural fiber feel with immediate softness, anyone who finds pure linen too crisp at first.

Not ideal for: those in extreme heat who need maximum breathability.

Bamboo Linen 70/30: The Softest Option

The 70 percent bamboo rayon, 30 percent linen blend is the softest fabric in our range. The higher bamboo content gives it a silky, fluid drape that is closer to the feel of bamboo fabric than to pure linen. It is also lighter and thinner than our other fabrics, which makes it particularly good for warm months or warmer climates where even the 45/55 blend feels slightly too substantial.

Because this fabric is woven in a wider width, the construction is seamless, which puts it on equal footing with French Linen in that regard. If a customer wants the seamless construction and immediate softness, and is less concerned with the long-term improvement quality of French Linen, the 70/30 is the right choice.

It requires slightly more careful washing than the 45/55 blend. Maximum 30 degrees Celsius, gentle cycle, no wringing. The higher bamboo rayon content means it is more heat-sensitive and more likely to distort if treated aggressively. It is the most delicate fabric we make.

Like the 45/55, it will lose its initial slight sheen after the first wash, settling into a softer, more relaxed texture. And like the 45/55, it shrinks approximately 10 percent on that first wash.

Best for: customers who prioritize softness above everything else, those who want seamless construction without pure linen's initial crispness, people in warm climates who prefer a lighter fabric weight.

Not ideal for: very hot humid climates where maximum breathability matters, or people who want the long-term improvement trajectory of French Linen.

H'Mong Hemp: Not Bedding

We want to be direct about this: the H'Mong Hemp products are not bedding and should not be compared with the three fabrics above as if they are alternatives to each other. They are coasters, table runners, scarves, and bags. They are made from hand-grown, hand-spun, hand-woven hemp by H'Mong communities in Ha Giang, Vietnam. They are 100 percent handmade by ethnic minority artisans using methods unchanged for thousands of years.

The texture is rough by any commercial standard. The fabric is stiff compared to processed linen or bamboo. The natural indigo dye will fade over time with washing and light exposure. None of these are defects. They are the direct result of the fabric being genuinely handmade without industrial intervention of any kind.

Why do we carry them alongside our bedding? Because the same attention we give to knowing what our linen is made from and where it comes from applies to these products too. H'Mong hemp is one of the oldest continuously-practiced textile traditions in Southeast Asia. The communities that make these products need markets. SCANDALINEN provides one. The two things coexist in our range because we think they should.

If you are looking for a gift that carries a real story, something handmade in the truest sense of the word, or a textile object that will age and develop character rather than depreciate, this is where to look.

Best for: people looking for meaningful gifts, buyers who value craft over uniformity, and anyone who wants something that was made entirely by hand with no machines involved at any stage.

Not bedding. Not comparable to the three fabric blends above on any comfort or thermal criteria.

The Honest Decision Guide

If you are sleeping hot and want the best thermal performance: 100% French Linen.

If you have never slept in linen before and are nervous about the initial feel: Bamboo Linen 45/55.

If softness is your absolute priority and you do not mind a slightly less breathable fabric: Bamboo Linen 70/30.

If you want seamless construction with immediate softness: Bamboo Linen 70/30.

If you are buying a long-term investment in your bedroom: 100% French Linen.

If you want a meaningful handmade gift or home object: H'Mong Hemp.

If you are not sure: start with a French Linen pillowcase. It is the lowest commitment way to understand what French Linen actually feels like before buying a full set.

The most common thing customers tell us after switching to French Linen is that they wish they had done it sooner. The most common thing customers tell us about the Bamboo Linen is that they did not expect it to feel as good as it does from the first night. Both things are true, for different people.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between French Linen and Bamboo Linen at SCANDALINEN?

French Linen is 100% European flax, OEKO-TEX certified, woven at 165 to 175 GSM. It starts crisp and softens progressively with every wash, improving significantly over years of use. It has no panel seams and is the best choice for hot climates and long-term investment. Bamboo Linen 45/55 is 45% linen and 55% bamboo rayon, softer from the first night, with flat panel seams along each side and 10% first-wash shrinkage. Bamboo Linen 70/30 is 70% bamboo rayon and 30% linen, the softest option, seamless construction, most delicate to care for. Both bamboo blends are better for customers who prefer immediate softness over the long-term improvement trajectory of French Linen.

Which SCANDALINEN fabric is best for hot sleepers?

100% French Linen is the strongest choice for hot sleepers. Its hollow fiber structure allows more airflow than any of the bamboo blends, and it wicks moisture away from skin rather than holding it. A 2024 systematic review published in the Journal of Sleep Research by the University of Sydney found that linen bedsheets produced significantly fewer sleep awakenings and less light-stage sleep than cotton under warm, humid conditions. The bamboo linen blends are also more breathable than cotton, but do not match pure linen's thermal performance in very hot, humid conditions.

Does the Bamboo Linen have visible seams?

The 45/55 Bamboo Linen (45% linen, 55% bamboo rayon) has two flat panel seams running along each side of the duvet cover and flat sheet, because the fabric is woven in a narrower width. The seams are neatly flat-stitched and add a subtle aesthetic detail to the construction – they are not uncomfortable to sleep against. The 70/30 Bamboo Linen (70% bamboo rayon, 30% linen) does not have panel seams, because it is woven in a wider width. The 100% French Linen also has no panel seams.

Which fabric should I choose if I have never used linen before?

Bamboo Linen 45/55 is the most common starting point for first-time linen users. It has the natural feel and breathability of linen with bamboo rayon's immediate softness, so there is no adjustment period. After experiencing the 45/55, many customers move to French Linen once they understand what natural fiber bedding is. Alternatively, starting with a French Linen pillowcase is a low-commitment way to experience pure linen before buying a full set.

Are the H'Mong Hemp products suitable as bedding?

No. The H'Mong Hemp products at SCANDALINEN are homewares: coasters, table runners, scarves, and bags. They are made from hand-grown, hand-spun, hand-woven hemp by H'Mong ethnic minority communities in Ha Giang, Vietnam. The fabric is rough, the construction is in small hand-woven panels, and the natural indigo dye fades over time. These are meaningful handmade objects with a 5,000-year craft tradition behind them. They are not comparable to the linen and bamboo linen bedding range on any comfort or care criteria.
